Light wind minnow sailing
January 27, 2009
Light wind sailing is a real test of patience and skill. In light wind sailing it is easy to loose concentration which makes it even more important. The sailors who can keep still in there boat and concentrate on what they are doing for the longest will usually always win.
The sail should be set so that the halyard is very loose and the outhaul a little bit firmer to stop the sail from bagging. There should be minimal to no vang on to enable the leech to open and power up the sail. Upwind it is important not to pull the main on to tight and to point a little lower. The most important part of light wind sailing is speed so don’t try and be clever by pointing too high. The boat should be heeled to leeward upwind and usually downwind as well.
Just remember that there is a lot of skill involved in light wind sailing and don’t just sit inside your boat and wait for some wind, get out there and give it a go.
